Windows 8 Developer Preview

Microsoft launched its newest version of the Windows operating system as a Developer Preview earlier this week. The new version of Windows has been officially named Windows 8. With its all new user interface that borrows plenty from the Windows 7 mobile platform,  Microsoft is planning to compete with the likes of Apple and Linux who have taken a good proportion of market share lately.

The operating system interface is optimized for use with touch screen computers. Nevertheless, the good old mouse and keyboard is not forgotten and it is very well compatible with those as well. The new operating system has very similar system requirements to that of its predecessor Windows 7 but the difference is in its memory usage and management. Windows 8 consumes lesser memory for the Kernel to load and so takes lesser time for booting and shutdown.
The first thing you will notice in the new look interface is the “Metro Style” appearance. Microsoft has taken this initiative slowly unlike the past where Silverlight SDK (Software Development Kit) was forced into the arena without prior real-time testing. Other interesting things you will notice will be the customizable live tiles in the main screen that lets you navigate through your computer’s content and applications in a jiffy, you can nevertheless switch back to the classic screen if you aren’t too comfortable with the new one.

Microsoft has played it clever this time around by making Windows 8 compatible with different hardware platforms. Windows Store Front is another good, albeit borrowed invention from the Linux and Apple platforms; you can now search, download and install Windows applications faster and if you are a developer, this is a good way to publish your application.  Different applications have the capability to communicate with each other and also sync across different Windows devices.

Windows 8 comes with the newest version of Internet Explorer, the version 10. This browser has been optimized for performance with both touch screen and gesture navigation. New security features include the exclusions of 3rd party plug-ins for the tablet versions; the desktop version though will still support Flash and other such plug-ins.
