The much improved iPhone by Apple, when launched created waves of craze amongst the young crowd. The new smartphone by Apple had everything that one normal user might need. This feature of iPhone is a great gift for travelers; if you travel a lot, then in normal cases you will have to find some cyber café or hotspot to get connected to the internet. But fore-seeing this particular problem, Apple provided facility to use iPhone as a modem. There are several ways and situations in which one can use an iPhone as a modem. If one wants to use internet on PC in a legit way while using an iPhone for it, he/she must be ready to pay in excessive amount in addition to otherwise expensive iPhone plan. Now we will take you through detailed steps about how to start internet tethering on your iPhone and use it as a modem.The ones having latest iPhone 4 can directly start internet tethering as new iOS supports wireless internet tethering.To enable tethering in this new generation iPhone, follow the steps:
- Go to settings –> Personal Hotspot
- Change the setting to “ON” instead “Off”.
- That’s it!
Users which are using any jail broken iPhone (2G, 3G, 3GS), here is what you should do:
- Open Cydia. (Cydia is a directory of application for jail broken iPhone).
- Click on the search option and search “MyWi”.
- You will get few results, using any one of them download that application “MyWi” and install it.
- Once installed, open that application. And as the application is very much self-explanatory, anyone can easily use it for internet tethering.

Contrary to this, there is another old method which can be used for internet tethering. Using few applications, one can use its EDGE/3G data network and route it in a way so as to share it with PC or laptop. One such application is NetShare Application. Although the application is paid one, a user can use it freely as a trial version. Here are the steps:
- Download the mentioned application and install it.
- Go to settings – Wi-Fi – Choose network and select “Static” and note the given IP address.
- Delete any DNS value.
- Now open the NetShare. Upon opening it should show the same IP you noted.
Settings to be done on PC:
- Now open Firefox and go to Tools – Options – Advanced – Network – Settings.
- Click on Manual Proxy Configuration.
- In the Socks Host type the IP Address you’ve noted and also enter the Port shown in Netshare application here.
- Make sure you tick on Socks
- Press OK and you’re done!!
